Sri Lanka,place by place

Six regions and six places to know — each with why to go, what to do and where it fits on the island.

Sigiriya from the air

Reading the island

One island, many worlds

Sri Lanka is small enough to cross in a day, yet its regions can feel like different countries. The dry plains of the north-central province hold the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the rock fortress of Sigiriya and the cave temple at Dambulla. Climb into the central highlands and the air cools around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, where tea estates wrap the slopes and the train winds between hill stations.

To the south and east lie the national parks — Yala, Udawalawe and, in the north-west, Wilpattu — and a coastline that runs from the ramparts of Galle Fort to the surf of Arugam Bay. The far north around Jaffna has a culture, cuisine and pace all of its own.

Our destination guides cover six regions and six stand-out places. Each explains why to go, what to do and how it fits into a wider route, with links to the tours and 3-night regional experiences that include it.

Where to go when

Follow the dry side

Two monsoons take turns across the island, so somewhere is almost always at its best. Use this as a general guide — weather varies from year to year.

For stay travellers

Stay longer, see more

Not every journey needs to keep moving. If you would rather unpack once or twice and explore from a base, these are the places that work best. Each regional experience is built around three nights in one area, and every stay — eco lodge, villa, boutique hotel, glamping site or hotel — is booked on a half-board basis.

01

Stay two nights or more

Arrive, spend one full day exploring, and leave rested. Two nights per base is the rhythm of our slow-pace tours.

02

Match the stay to the place

An eco lodge or glamping site near the national parks, a villa on the coast, a hotel among the tea estates — each region suits a different kind of stay.

03

Know what half board covers

Breakfast and dinner are at your stay; lunch is left free, so you can eat wherever the day takes you.

04

Finish by the sea

Pair a cultural or wildlife base with a few beach nights at the end — the south coast or, in season, the east.
